Most of us find it easier to experience empathy with people we can relate to in some way, but we may find it difficult to empathize with those people whose interests appear to be in conflict with ours (Sadri, 2015). Empathy is the ability to ‘put yourself in their shoes’ and to try to understand another’s point of view. As a clinician, you will encounter many different scenarios over time. Empathy is not agreeing with the client’s behavior but trying to understand the behavior (Clinton & Ohlschlager, 2002, p. 208). To empathize with our clients we must be able to put our own thoughts and feelings aside so that we can better understand our client.
