Despite the immense similarities between both empanadas and pastelitos there are some differences. This also applies to the other variations of this dish. For example, with both dishes they are typically made with dough and filled with different types of meat like tuna, pork, and chorizo, however, the pastelitos is often made with more lard in its dough and are a bit smaller than the typical empanada. Argentina has the Empanadas Mendocinas which is a baked empanada that contains milk within its dough and is usually filled with beef, egg, and olive. El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica share the Empanada de Plátanos. This recipe calls for mashed plantains for the dough with an interchangeable filler. Mexico has the Pastes Pachuqueños, This dish includes a dough made from wheat flour, causing the pastry to be thinner than most other types of empanadas.
