What thoughts or emotions did Atticus have when he was appointed to defend Thomas Robison of his rape charges against Mayella Ewell? In the novel Atticus was appointed by the court of Maycomb to defend Thomas Robinson from the crime that he was accused of committing. My Character is Atticus Finch, and he is a lawyer from Maycomb County. He has two children, Jem Finch, and Scout Finch. “We know all men are not created equal in the sense some people would have us believe- some people are smarter than others, some people have more opportunity because they're born with it, some men make more money than others, some ladies make better cakes than others- some people are born gifted beyond the normal scope of men. But there is one way in this country in which all men are created equal- there is one human institution that makes a pauper the equal of a Rockefeller, the stupid man the equal of an Einstein, and the ignorant man the equal of any college president. That institution, gentlemen, is a court (Lee Pg.209).” Basically Atticus is saying is All men aren’t created equal but should be treated equally in court. "You aren't really a nigger-lover, then, are you?" "I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody (Harper 144). Atticus does his best to not judge by race of color but to love everybody and give them a chance to be loved. Atticus believes that everyone should be treated equally.
Atticus believes in justice and the justice system. He doesn't like criminal law, yet he accepts the appointment to Tom Robinson's case. People think that Tom Robinson Should be brought to justice without a trial. Atticus is a heroic figure in the novel and a respected man in Maycomb. Jem or Scout didn’t idolizes him at the beginning of the novel. Throughout the novel, Atticus works to have Scout’s and Jem’s respect, through both teaching life lessons, as he tells Scout to put herself in another person’s shoes before she judges them, and example, as when he takes Tom Robinson’s case, living up to his moral standards despite the harsh consequences he knows that he will soon face. Atticus is trying to teach them right and wrong to wrong and right through the whole novel by building their relationships with each other. “Atticus was in Jem’s room, sitting by his bed.
