When you love someone, you would give them the world. You would sacrifice yourself for the one that you love no matter what. You are willing to put yourself out there for him. You are willing to put him first and yourself last. It was Christmas time; Della was determined to find the perfect present for Jim. Della would sacrifice anything for her husband that she loves dearly. In the short story, “The Gift of the Magi” theme plays an important role in the development of the message in the story as seen through the character’s motivations, the feelings, the actions.

Della’s love for Jim really does show due to her actions that she has portrayed. To demonstrate, “I had my hair cut off and sold it” (Henry 106). Additional, Della cut her hair just to give her husband a present. This is a huge sacrifice. Every girl loves her hair and the fact that she gave it up so easily that shows that she has strong feelings for him. Della never doubted her choice. For instance, “ “twenty dollars,” said Madame, lifting the mass with a practiced hand. “Give it to me quick,” said Della” (Henry 105). To emphasize, Della made a huge sacrifice, which shows her true love towards him. Della didn't even think twice or doubt her decision, she immediately took the cash. She just knew what she wanted, and she chased it just for Jim. In sum, she is a selfless person which really does show through her actions.
In the final analysis, in the story, The Gift of the Magi, the theme stands out due to her motivations for her huge sacrifice, feelings towards Jim, the actions for buying the perfect gift. In The Gift of the Magi, Della’s love towards him is so special she would do anything to express her love for him. She made the ultimate sacrifice a woman can make, which is her appearance.
