Katniss struggled to understand Peeta as he suggested in an interview before the games he was in love with her. Afraid and unsure of his intentions she did not want to fall into a trap if he were to attempt to kill her. Instead, she reminds herself “don’t be so stupid Peeta is planning how to kill you… he is luring you in to make you easy prey. The more likeable he is, the more deadly he is” (72). Katniss states this as she does not want to make herself vulnerable however is confused if he actually has feelings for her or is playing a mental game. Because of this I believe Katniss treats Peeta negatively, however attempting to protect Katniss even before the games begin. During this stage in the tournament Katniss attempts to show her physical skills to the gamemakers. Katniss performs her ability with a bow and arrow however, struggles to gain the attention. Her reaction to this was without thought “I pull an arrow from my quiver and send it straight at the Gamemaker's table. I hear shouts of alarm as people stumble back. The arrow skewers the apple in the pig's mouth and pins it to the wall behind it.” (102). Katniss’s quick physical reaction may have cost her life however receives praise as she receives an extremely high score of eleven on the survival scale. Along with her survival capabilities, I believe Katniss displays assertive and aggressive behavior that is reflected towards the capitol; a behavior that negatively affects her abilities mentally and
