Emotions In S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders

The Outsiders Rough Draft Can you hide your emotions from everyone or will you lash out on them? Emotions can be really hard to hide, and they can affect everyone else's emotions too, with sadness passing on to sadness. This can apply to events as well, like a chain reaction. S.E Hinton’s The Outsiders portrays these chain reactions clearly with each character having more problems grow when they were expressing their strong emotions; Ponyboy, Darry, and Dally are perfect examples for this, with their emotional outbursts towards everyone and themselves.

Notably though what does this do to a person, will they break? Dally did. That is to say, this stress builds up on Darry and gets him to be so angry at Ponyboy, that he resorts to violence. “Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door” (50). This later contributes to Ponyboy running away from his home. Likewise, when Pony is gone with Johnny are on the run. In the book it’s hinted when Dally tells Pony, that his brothers are worrying about them deeply. Despite this, with Darry still being the loving brother he is, protects Pony from all the news media from the hospital after the church incident. “Darry finally told them I wasn't in any shape to be yelled at so much and they slowed down a little. Darry’s kind of big” (100). As time goes when Pony’s grief engulfs, Darry is affected by this and gets worried about Pony, and also gets frustrated with him. They argue overtime, and realizing this isn’t the way to go as they also get Sodapop caught up in it, with him getting upset as well.
