The majority of humans have a basic understanding of emotion. The question is not our understanding, but rather why we feel. Most humans react to a situation with some form of emotion, weather the reaction is sad, angry, or indifferent. Some individuals might react differently to a situation and respond with joy, happiness, or elation. This complex series of reactions are part of human nature; the ability to show emotion on such a vast scale is something truly remarkable. They make the individual happy, and give them a desire to treat the ones around them with respect, or to comfort someone when they need it, as opposed to giving them the cold shoulder.
