Eponine’s selflessness is admirable through her actions which resemble her deep love for Marius. Her willingness to go out of her way shows how much she adores his attention. When Marius meets Eponine for the first time, “She went to him, and …show more content…
She had gone to the barricade to give Marius the note Cosette had written for him. However, Marius did not know she had the note until he found Eponine lying on the ground after being wounded by a bullet from the crossfire. As Eponine was slowly dying, she reaches for the note and says, “Listen, I don’t want to deceive you. I have a letter in my pocket for you. Since yesterday. I was told to put it in the post. I kept it. I didn’t want it to reach you. But you would not like it of me perhaps when we meet again so soon… (Hugo 244).” This moment is when Marius finally sees Eponine as a woman with true feelings towards him. During her last moment Eponine finally expresses her true feelings when saying, “And then, do you know, Monsieur Marius, I believe I was a little in love with you. She essayed to smile again and expired. (Hugo 244)” In this scene Eponine’s soft smile, as she dies, resembles the immense amount of happiness Marius makes her feel. As Marius listens to her singing, he replies to Eponine with words of love, “But you will live, ‘Ponine –dear God above, / If I could heal your wounds with words of love. (Little Fall of Rain)” Because Marius says this to Eponine, he is showing his love to heal Eponine’s heart as she is dying. It is possible that the love Marius displays is a real reflection of what real love should be.
Even though Cosette ends up with Marius, there is a deeper love hidden between Eponine and Marius throughout the story. If Marius would have opened his eyes sooner to see that Eponine had loved him from the beginning, then things could have been different for them. If Marius would have simply taken the time to notice her, Eponine could have lived happily without needing to risk her life. Desolately, this story did not end the way Eponine had hoped. Not all love stories are supposed to end happily, however in this story the love repaired Eponine’s
