Emotions Affecting The Culture Of Immigrants

The emotions the culture bag drew out ideas and emotions of nostalgia and pride for me. The assignment triggered sentiments of my grandparents and their influence on my beliefs and customs. I now recognize being a first generation Irish, affects my traditions and values more than those in American for generations. Last, I discovered that culture is unique and not predictable. For example, my culture relates to my heritage, but does not for others. The key similarities between my cultural group and others in the course include; family, food, celebrating holidays and religion. Most groups acknowledged that: cuisine; family; traditions; religion; and holidays play a role in their ideas and way of life. He educated me on how prejudices and discrimination can lead to terrorist acts and the unfair treatment of people due to their religious and political differences. In addition, we traveled to Belfast, so I might learn the customs and experience the culture. Also, my Sicilian culture prepared me for social work. Like many immigrants, my paternal great-grandmother could not speak English. So, to communicate with her I had to learn to understand the Italian language. I imagine my first-hand knowledge and understanding of the language barriers for immigrants will aid my social work practice. The cultural bag assignment educated us on our own and others culture. For instance, I learned that I relate my philosophies, behaviors, and lifestyle to my heritage. Additionally, how culture is changing and a perception of self and changing that means different things to different people. I will use this better understanding of cultural context going forward in my social work
