Introduction The purpose of this research report is to find out: how can music be used as a motivational tool for emotionally disturbed students. In a fifth grade ICT classroom, there are students who have special needs and students who are generalized as “normal”. In the classroom, there are six students who are on the special education spectrum. One of the students stands out because he is classified as “emotionally disturbed”. In the beginning of the school year, the student would refuse to come to school and when he came to school he would throw tantrums. He would kick, scream, curse and try to punch any of the staff members. He has been put on medication since and the medication has calmed him down. The student has been part of the classroom since October but refuses to do his school work, homework and anything that is school related. The student was part of an ICT classroom at P.S./I.S. 113. He is 11 years old. In the first part of the study the student will be given a questioner with different questions regarding music. The next part of the study consists of giving the student was an IPad with different genres of music. The student would be able to listen to the music during test and written assignment. The survey was given to the student and he responded to all of the questions. The student listens to music every day after school with his older brother. Most of the time they listen to Rap music and music relaxes him. He reported that he does not know what classical music is and does not think that he has ever heard it. He does not like instrumental music because there are not any words. Furthermore, he likes going to music class because sometimes they get to listen to music that he hears on the radio. Also, he would like to listen to music while in school because it calms him down.
