Emotional State Of Americans In Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast Of Champions

In the novel, Breakfast of Champions, Kurt Vonnegut discusses the issue of overall emotional state of Americans. This seems to be a rather recurring theme of the novel. Previously, Vonnegut says: "A lot of citizens were so ignored and cheated and insulted that they thought they might be in the wrong country, or even on the wrong planet, that some terrible mistake had been made. It might have comforted them some if their anthem and their motto had mentioned fairness or brotherhood or hope or happiness, had somehow welcomed them to society and its real taste" (pg. 9). Vonnegut is implying that most Americans are unhappy with the way society is as of now. I can somewhat see how what he is saying is true, because if all Americans were happy with

Political extremes have always been a part of the American system, but when these outliers are allowed to take center stage it can cause a multitude of problems. These extremists pray upon Americans fears often prompting mass hysteria. In his book, American Hysteria, Andrew Burt explains why these hysterias occur and uses five historical examples. His thesis is that political extremism is used as a coping mechanism for Americans who have lost social status and their sense of national identity which results in a scapegoat being blamed. Overall Burt’s book does an excellent job of explaining the origins of the phenomena that is hysteria, the historical impacts of it, and how to best combat it in the future.…

What does it mean to be American? Does it mean to live in a society which is based on the pillar that everyone deserves a chance? Or, is it one where everyone is driven by the notion of greed? It may be both. In what What Does It Mean to be American, James Baldwin is able to put forth his questioning of the state of American society versus European society. The specific passage that questions the state of writers in America as they focus to much on individualism and not society. Mr. Baldwin states “they do not describe society, and have no interest in it. They only describe individuals in opposition to it or isolated from it.” (141 Baldwin) America is plagued with the issue as Herbert Hoover said, “rugged individual” (Herbert Hoover) this is in our blood as a society and universally accepted.…

I found Breakfast of Champions to be a very strange novel. The strangeness of this book, at least for me, was found in the random facts throughout the book. Most of these facts did relate to what the author was speaking about, but the detail was overpowering to the storyline. Another strange part was the language used. For example, the word “humanoid”, “earthling", and “leak” are the ones that come to mind.…

I saw America from author’s point of view and was somewhat convinced by his thought process. The perception he had of social issues aligned with mine as well. The major issue brought up in the book, which was directly and if not directly, indirectly responsible for writing the fate of most of the characters in this story was racism. I think that solution to this problem is communication. People often talk in hushed tone about issues that they are not comfortable with.…

I used to believe that being American meant that we accepted ourselves and others, after reading this unit, I’ve learnt that being American is much, much more than that. Whilst accepting ourselves and others is absolutely something important, it’s not what being American necessarily is. To be an American, which the definition varies upon whom you ask, is to understand what language everyone is speaking. Not literally, although it would be quite helpful to understand what someone is actually saying, but I mean in a sense of the allegory.…

With this passage, the author superbly illustrates that not only is the American Dream dead, but that many of its most avid followers eventually die with it. Once corrupted, it is nothing more than a false ideal people dedicate their very existences to, only to realise that they could have never truly obtained it. It is the product of the loss of morals of the new, modern world, in which…
