Life Event
The life event this paper will focus on is my mom’s struggle with internet addiction. I toyed with a few different ideas, but settled on this one because it would be the most interesting to write about while still being an easy topic to fit in to the requirements of the paper. When I got my first job at the age of 18, I started to realize that there were other people who were interested in conversing with me. Of course, before then, I still had my friends and other family members, but something about a person not bothering to listen has a powerful impact on the self-esteem of children.
As a teen, I had gotten used to the negative feelings associated with my mom’s internet addiction. Instead of viewing it as a big problem, I thought it was a minor annoyance. Any time the power would go out, she would nearly have a meltdown about the fact that she couldn’t use the internet. My dad and I were more worried about other issues, like the food that could rot in our refrigerator if power was not restored in time.
Despite the problems that came from her internet addiction, I found benefits in it as a teenager. Because she didn’t pay attention to her surroundings, I could leave the house and stay gone for the entire day. She often woke up in the late afternoon and stayed awake until five in the morning. When I was fourteen, I could leave the house at ten in the morning and not come back until three in the morning, without calling in to tell her where I was. I did this once, and she didn’t notice that I was gone (although she would have noticed if she had needed me to do
