Emotional Learning In High School

For nine years I have worked with middle school students and have enjoyed every moment with them. I strongly believe this is the age groups where students need the most help on deciding rather they will continue their education or dropout. Middle school is where I plan on servicing children, so to get out of my comfort zone, I selected a high school article. The high school article is called, “Social Emotional Learning in High School: How Three Urban High Schools Engage, Educate, and Empower Youth,” by MarYam G. Hamedani and Linda Darling-Hammond. Research on implementing Social Emotional Learning is usually implemented in elementary school and studies have showed that it was very effective. There is very little research on implementing Social Emotional Learning in high school and evaluating the research if it was effective. So, this article chose three high schools that represented “a range of socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic diversity.” This article caught my attention because one of the high schools was from my hometown in San Antonio, Texas, the International School of the Americas. For example, each school’s mission and vision statement was influenced by the schools community norms but centered on the social emotional learning values. All adults in each school modeled effectively how to interact and socialize between adults and students. They were the role models for the students. Students were given the opportunities to self-reflect, self-manage and were given the space for physical/emotional time. This gave the opportunity for students to feel empowered by making their own decisions and take ownership for their social
