I scored very high in self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, and empathy. A time I exhibited my EI was recently when I was talking to a mom about scheduling a follow-up appointment for her newborn. This mom was from out of state but delivered her baby in the Emergency Department parking lot here in Kansas City, Missouri. The mom of this newborn had already declined the dose of Vitamin K, Erythromycin eye ointment, the initial Hepatitis B vaccine, was requesting early discharge, and was now declining to schedule a follow-up appointment for the newborn here in Kansas City even though she would not be returning to her home for at least a week. I stayed calm, reiterated the reasons for the follow-up appointment, and in a non-judgmental, non-threatening way asked the mom her reasons for declining the recommended medications and follow-up care for her newborn. It turns out that she was concerned about the cost and was trying to cut expenses. I arranged for the mom to meet with a social worker to explore available resources, a financial counselor, and I planned for the newborn to come back to the hospital over the weekend for a weight check and quick exam without incurring additional expense. I believe my level of EI in this circumstance allowed for an effective
