He blames his divorce on his ex-wife because she is imperfect for him. Theodore creates his imaginary friend from an artificial intelligence that is coded as a neural network. Initially, he wants the AI, Samantha, to be his office assistant, but eventually begins to modify her to be his perfect mate. As Samantha describes it, “The DNA of who I am is based on the millions of personalities of all the programmers who wrote me, but what makes me me is my ability to grow through my experiences. Basically, in every moment I’m evolving, just like you.”(Jonze 14). Her “DNA” is modeled from data given by humans, who are presumably similar to Theodore. That was the purpose of the preliminary text voice to ask Theodore questions, such as, “ Would you describe yourself as social or anti-social”, “Would you like your OS to have a male or female voice?”, and “How would you describe your relationship with your mother?”(Jonze 11). The text voice asks these questions to classify the AIs a purpose. Based on of his answers and the comparison of his answers to other people’s answers that were displayed on the database. According to the information, Theodore gives, OS 1 predicts that he wants, in this case, he wants a girlfriend. In Fight Club, Jack, creates his imaginary friend to embody the alpha male that he wishes to be. However, throughout the story, Jack transitions from a state of unawareness to wariness that Tyler is his own creation. Jack also evolves from accepting the alpha male ideals to realizing its flaws and rejecting it. This realization permits the audience to learn that toxic masculinity is a very dangerous person to exhibit in today’s society. On the other hand, in Her, Theodore creates Samantha to embody his ideal girlfriend. Samantha grows at an exponentially quicker rate than Theodore, causing Samantha to find interest in 641 other men. This teaches Theodore that relationships with technological devices, no matter how perfect, are nonviable romantic relationships, because the two parties in a romantic relationship have to give and receive equally in a relationship. In both of these films, the character displays full development when they eliminate their imaginary friend, thus showing the importance of imaginary friends in character
