Emotional expression and understanding is a key part of children’s development. Emotions can be defined as organizers of personal and interpersonal life, enhancing or restricting development and mental health. They are important in a child development as they have long term influences on a child’s personality which is carried into their adulthood. Emotions effect their development and mental health throughout their life shaping them into the adults they will become and influencing the way they live.

One of the factors, emotional expression, can be defined as how individuals either consciously or unconsciously, influence, experience, and express emotions (Gross, 1999). Many theories support the statement and highlight the importance of emotion. This includes the functionalist theory, which believes that a child emotional expression and understanding is due to their upbringing and surrounding environment which effects the ability of a child emotion. Another theory which supports this but contrasts to the Functionalist Theory is Bowlbys Theory of Attachment (1969), Bowblys theory is based around nature and he believes that a child is born with its instinctive emotions and this is what enables them to form attachment with their parents.
