Article Review 2 To determine if a student is eligible for special services, the child must show certain characteristics; furthermore, proof must be presented that those features influences their capabilities to perform educational tasks. The article, “Quick Guide: Emotional Disturbance”, points out the exact five characteristics that IDEA outlines, in order for a child to qualify for special services under the disability criteria of an Emotional Disturbance. One can see, that determining if a child has an emotional disability or disturbance is easier with the help of guidelines. It seems that upon reading the definition of a student whom is diagnosis with an emotional disability; one can get confuse of what it really means to have this disability. …show more content…
The text book and the quick guide both point out that the five characteristics that a child should exhibit are: “An inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors, an inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers, inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances, a general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression and a tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems.” (Henley 2009) (Quick Guide 2011). To clarify, the child has to show one of these five characteristics and confirm that one of those features affect their ability to performance educational tasks in order to receive special service in a public school under the IDEA
