These conflicts can be emotional or psychological issues and can lead to major disagreements. This is shown in the short stories, “Rules of the Game” by Amy Tan, which is a story of a young girl named Waverly who falls in love with chess and becomes sort of a local celebrity. The short story “The Interlopers” by Saki which is a story of two families in the middle of property feud. “If only on this wild night, in this dark, lone spot, he might come across Georg Znaeym, man to man, with none to witness-- that was the wish that was uppermost in his thoughts. And as he stepped round of a huge beech he came face to face with the man he sought,” (Saki). Gradwitz is looking to kill Znaeym and they meet face to face on the property in which they have been disputing over for generations. The fact that Gradwitz is planning to kill Znaeym and the fact they have a long lasting feud shows they are paralyzed emotionally and psychologically. Emotionally they are paralyzed because they have such a hatred for each other that they want to kill each other they do not even consider friendship until trapped under a tree. Psychologically they are paralyzed because this feud and hatred has been passed down for generations, all their lives they are told they hate each other so much that Gradwitz is planning to kill

“The feud might, perhaps, have died down or been compromised if the personal ill will of the two men had not stood in the way” (Saki 83), this quote really shows how two the main characters were foolish and instead of ending the feud between them, they kept trying to kill each other. Ulrich and Georg were both very foolish and kept trying to find each other. On page 83 author Saki states “each had hate in his heart and murder uppermost in his mind,” (Saki 83) this also shows how Georg and Ulrich kept trying to find each other instead of ending the feud. What the two main characters didn't know was that soon later an inconvenience of them being together would happen and their eyes would open of how foolish they were.…

There are two types of people in the world: the ones who like a definitive ending and the ones who leave it up to their imagination. I consider myself to be the type to leave it to my imagination, therefore I found the epilogue unnecessary information that Dostoevsky could have left for the reader to complete. Part VI ended strongly, it captured Raskolnikov’s psychological regret in realistic manner. The epilogue, in a way, watered down the strength of Part VI. All of the developing relationships and conflicts ended in a ‘happy ever after’ epilogue, decreasing the depth of the whole novel.…

The author, Saki, created a situation for the two main characters, Georg and Ulrich, from his short story, “The Interlopers”. For example, this situation causes a violence between these two characters. In addition, Ulrich was a former landowner and Georg was trespassing on his land and using Ulrich’s land for himself. Heroes, throughout time, intrinsically portray noble stalwarts that selflessly defend commoners from imminent danger by operating with abounding strength and bravery. A steadfast moral compass, that also inherently abides within them, leads heroes to ethical and upright decisions. Conversely, a protagonist who lacks the qualities of a hero is referred to as an antihero; he or she serves as an example of how one should not live. Leo Tolstoy contributes to the hero versus antihero archetype with Ivan Ilych, who, when faced with his own mortality, commits to an internal battle between right and wrong. In The Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy, the protagonist Ivan Ilych overcomes his self-centeredness and cowardice to achieve the status of a hero by bravely confronting the realities of his life.…

Sometimes in order to solve an external conflict, we must solve our internal conflict first. In his short story “The Interlopers”, H.H. Munro presents the “character vs. self” conflict as the most significant. This is because it affected the inciting incident, rising action of the story, and climax. The first reason of why the “character vs. self” conflict was the most important, is because it created the inciting incident.…

Wolff structures this story tactfully, revealing significant information in a way that seems natural and deliberate. He drops the reader into the story with very little background information about the characters, gradually revealing key information about their pre-existing lives as the story progresses.
