The Problem We All Live With
This argument essay is about the integration of black as well as white students at school beyond color discrimination. This American Life is actually a radio show which is programmed for American public. “The Problem We All live with” is 58th episode of this radio show and it discusses segregation in education in 2015. The program is composed to interview an investigative reporter at The New York Times named Nikole Hannah-Jones. In the very start of the essay Nikole uses very logical arguments regarding what has been done by the schools for the betterment of white as well as black kids. Here actually “Missouri accidentally launched a school integration plan”. Nikole is very instrumental to present the scenario faced by the black kids as they reach the Francis Howell. All of the teachers and the staff seemed very concerned and their words were really embarrassing for the children as they said we will be hampered as “those student scores will become our scores”. Nikole used pathos as she presents a situation where everyone is getting judgmental about Normandy black students getting integrated in the white students of Francis Howell. The whites seems to say as if they are threatened for security and all kinds of stuff. The black students and their parents are just feeling like criminals with tears in them. My child may be the lawyer that defends your child one day. How dare you?” Even the crowd applauding a white women who seems to come up aggressively as she feels she is called a racist show how partial the situation is still, this is indeed shear use of pathos. Nikole comes up with logic that after all such behavior faced by the black people in integration system “we said integration failed instead of the truth, which is that it was working”. She used many emotional scenes to elaborate what the black students and their parents felt when the state of Normandy school was unaccredited. Nikole very much used every argument and the pathos at the same time to show that integration is the real solution for solving the problems of all black students. The change in their surroundings is the real way out towards their improvement. Eventually it is realized by the higher authorities that black students are not performing better so “They 're sending in teacher coaches from wealthier districts”. This is a logical argument on the side of the authorities that these people more equipped people are the one to improve the Normandy school. Nikole is just disgusted as she believes that this is actually a false opinion to “keep Normandy students inside the district”. This is against the logic to a very working
