“Pool full of liquor then you dive in.” Kendrick Lamar’s song “Swimming Pools” conveys a much deeper meaning than many first perceived. A meaning of growing up with an alcoholic family, violent neighborhood, and the struggle of depending on alcohol to lift you up. A text that has significant value, instead of another alcohol rap song to take shots to. The plot, setting, conflict, and characters are relatable and believable. The plot of drinking way too much is relatable due to the feelings we face while under the influence. A feeling of not being in-control of our own bodies and acting crazy. The setting of falling into peer pressure and the conflict of drinking too much is something most people have been through before. Most people have done something they knew was wrong only because someone encouraged the wrong behaviors upon them. Being a young adult myself, I think it will be very hard for teens and young adults to really understand the deeper message embedded in Lamar’s lyrics. Many times we only listen to a song and forget that the lyrics can contain a powerful message. Music videos often show expectations of drinking alcohol as a way to cope with problems, but this is something the media and artists need to get away from. Eventually, maybe the future generations can reveal and pay closer attention to these deeper meaning to songs and view them in a different
