Emmons’ article about portfolio cover letter is very informative. It not only covers insights from the instructors’ perspective from reading the letters, but also describes interpretations of the writers. I've learn that the purpose of the portfolio cover essays are for instructors to understand students’ work ethics and reflect upon their own teaching methods. However, the issue with these letters is that most of them are “scripted responses to… the narrative of progress- it begins with a reluctant, frightened student and ends with an articulate, confident writer” (Emmons 47).
