Emmet Gowin was born in Danville, Virginia in 1941 and currently resides in Newtown, PA. While growing up in rural Virginia, he showed interest in art, which later led him to photography.

In 1965, he received a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in Graphic Design from Richmond Professional Institute, which is now known as Virginia Commonwealth University today. Shortly after receiving his BFA, he went to Rhode Island School of Design to receive a MFA (Masters of Fine Arts) in Photography in 1967(Pace/MacGill).

Early on in Gowins career he entered photography by using his wife as a model for some very intimate photographs. Many people saw these images to be very risqué. He saw it as art; something beautiful that he wanted to share with the world. Then he moved on to take

The title to one of his images that I find beautiful is, “Edith and Elijah, Danville, Virginia”. The main focus is on the mother, Edith and her baby boy, Elijah. It comes across very natural with the lighting, her hair, which is still in curlers, wearing a simple top and shorts, while taking care of her baby boy. The background is beautiful yet simple; she is sitting down on some nice lush grass in front of lovely full-bloomed rose bushes. This image is in black and white, which gives it an appealing perception.

The next image is titled, Elijah and Donna Jo, Danville, Virginia. Here Gowin is showing the pure enjoyment children have during a hot summers day. His daughter and son are wearing shorts playing with a water hose in the yard with large trees in the background surround the children. This image is in black and white; when I look at this it, it reminds me of my childhood and how innocent and happy children
