“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free….” We all grew up with these famous lines. Emma Lazarus was born in Manhattan, New York on July 22, 1849. She is one of seven children born to Mr. Moses and Esther Nathan Lazarus. The Lazarus family were Sephardic Jews who had lived in Portugal. They came to America in the times of the Mr. Lazarus was known to be a “banker because of his many dealings with the banks” despite him being an industrialist and working in a sugar refining business. He held his daughter, Emma, in very high esteem, considering her “as somehow too good for this world”, and therefore homeschooled her and allowed her to go outside only very rarely. She was into literature and poetry from a young age, and learned many languages (German, French, and Italian) and history from the best private tutors. Emma began writing at a very young age. In 1867, Mr. Lazarus published her first book Poems and Translations: Written Between the Ages of Fourteen and Seventeen. In the book she translated the works of Victor Hugo, Schiller, and Heinrich Heine. The book was dedicated to her father and was published with Emma’s full name on it. Emmerson published Parnassus which included works from both American and English poets together. The book did not include any of Emma’s poems. This was a huge let down for Emma and caused her to have a major breakdown. She tried to write him a letter, but received no answer. This pushed her to try and write some other genres.
