Initially, Jack’s knowledge and vocabulary was only limited to the objects in Room so when he is suddenly introduced to the outside world, he fears and takes caution of every new object or person he encounters, seeming quite abnormal. As Ma correctly observes, “Lots of things are freaking Jack out right now. But I hate the way the media call him a freak, or an idiot savant, or feral, that word—”(Donoghue, 304). Ma is concerned for Jack’s transition to the outside world and his future as she believes the media is giving the public a wrong impression of Jack at such an early age. As a result, Ma is forced to completely shield Jack from any outside attention through several tactics as noted by her interviewer: “You must feel an almost pathological need—understandably—to stand guard between your son and the world” (Donoghue, 305).
