Emma is proposed Marriage by Mr. Knightley and she is ridiculing that she cannot get married to Mr. Knightley, she is not interested with that proposal (p.339) but at the end she got married to Mr. Knightley. Emma is a young, beautiful, rich, sociable and outgoing girl and Knightley is calculating and cunning that is the reason he tactfully proposes Emma at a time when Emma lost another probable her husband, Frank. The two are well matched in terms of their social class.
The marriage between Robert Martin and Harriet Smith portrays their low status in the novel. Although Robert Martin had a neat and sensible appearance, this could not give him an advantage to get married to a person with a different social class. It was evidenced by the fact that he got married with Harriet smith, a lady who has a social class similar to his. However, Wuthering Heights’ social demand does not spare the room. As in Emma, Mr. Elton wants to maintain social gain in a society by marrying Miss Hawkin. Heathcliff also tries to have his son Linton marries Cathy, his sister’s daughter in order to maintain wealth in the family of the late Mr. and Mrs. Earnshaw. This really shows that characters in the novels want to maintain their social status while others are busy trying to improve their social traits for example Elton and Heathcliff.
In conclusion, the two novels really share common flow of events for instance, the two main families in the novels i.e Woodhouse and Earnshaw. It seems single parent family at some extent and almost the attribute of their protagonist which is Emma and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. Again, some activities in the novels such as love issues, marriage issues and social demand varies based on the position of the person in the society. The poor marries the poor while the rich marries the rich hence the two novels are indeed sharing almost equal story
