Marshall Mathers, otherwise known as Eminem, started his rap career as a young kid growing up in Detroit. In 1983 Eminem’s Uncle got him an Ice T CD and that was what inspired him to start rapping (Eminem timeline). When he was growing up he went to many different schools because he and his mom were constantly moving all over the suburbs of Detroit (Eminem greatest). Eminem was bullied in school and as he said,” beat up in the bathroom, beat up in hallways, shoved into lockers for the most part just being the new kid” (Eminem greatest). Eminem began rapping on stage at a local place in his neighborhood where they would do rap battles (Eminem greatest). Eminem was the only white rapper, so for him it was all about being able to gain respect from everyone (Eminem greatest). There were no other famous white rappers at the time Eminem was beginning his career. He went on to release his first album in 1996, but he did not sell many copies (Eminem Timeline). Two years later in 1998 he was signed by Dr. Dre and released his second album, “The Slim Shady LP” (Eminem Timeline). In many of Eminem’s lyrics he uses gay slurs as well and violent phrases. In December of 2007 he almost died from an overdose in his own home and would have died if the doctors had came two hours later (Eminem greatest). It is said that he had to teach himself how to perform while not being high (Eminem greatest). Women and gay groups went on to protest when he was nominated for four different Grammy’s in 2001 (Eminem timeline). Throughout his career Eminem has won three hundred forty awards while selling over forty-nine million albums in the United States (Kelly). It is safe to say that Eminem has been through more than any of us can imagine. Many people talk about how they started from the bottom
