Emily Rapp's Essay I Prayed My Mom Would Leave '

Decent Essays
I learned many things out of the three essays. All three essays told interesting stories! The Okahandja Lessons by Emily Rapp told a great story. Emily Rapp who had a prosthetic limb saw people who were in the same boat as her. Emily viewed these people very different than she viewed herself. From this essay I learned that descriptive narration can be fiction or non-fiction. I also learned that using vivid detail and imagery can be helpful to the reader. The essay I Prayed my Mom Would Leave by Melissa Chadburn was a very interesting essay. I thought Melissa's descriptive narration was different from Emily's. Melissa's was a little confusing to me, there was not as much detail as Emily's essay. I learned that setting is a big component in descriptive

I chose to write journal entries about the book Ellen Foster written by Kaye Gibbons. Each of the journal entries are written by Ellen showing her perspectives over different scenarios throughout the book. The first journal entry she writes is about her dad being an abusive father. She writes about how she is tired of being abused and she ends up finding another place to go. The second journal entry is saying how she was only able to stay at her Aunt's house for a short while until she had to go back to her father's house.…

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

For me personal I would choose the essay because it delivers the author's message. The main message in this story is survival requires courage, strength, and cunning. This is a true story about what happened to Andrew Lam and his life in the refugee camps. In the essay Andrew says “When I was eleven, about your age, I too fled from my homeland with my mother and sister and grandmother when the communist tanks came rolling into Saigon, Vietnam. We ended up in a refugee camp in Guam.”…

As I continued reading the essay I noticed that the tone was also different than the first essay. The first essay’s tone felt like there was compassion about the subject and it felt like the author was actually talking to me. The tone of this essay was more indifferent and emotionless. Maybe this was a result of the essay having more of a macro-level subject, or the simple fact that it talked about more historic events than historic figures. No matter what caused the indifferent tone, this made the essay less entertaining to read and I struggled to pay attention to what I was reading.…

The reason why I chose this genre is because I wanted to see more about it and what goes in each of the three stories. In all three stories there is something to be learned from the interactions of the people. The stories are similar and different in many ways. The things that I will be discussing are science and technology, The elements of science, critical aspects of society, human nature and society, and the theme. There are many scientific elements in all three stories, Some of the elements are hard to find.…

Writing was not a subject that held my interest in high school. Throughout the last twelve years I have found myself having to write letters, proposals, and business correspondence for my employers. I would complete the assignment and move on to the next task. Deciding to further my education I enrolled in Daytona State College and my first class was your ENC 1101. I have seen a change in my pre-class writing style; I have honed my skills, and the different techniques I have learned while taking this course have only improved my writing style.…

This course has improved myself as a writer and has a critical thinker; with the essays that were written I was challenged to ask more questions and see the bigger picture on things and view a subject from all sides. I never wrote an argumentative essay before this course, so this course taught me what it was how to write one and what exactly I was looking for and what I would be able to improve on. I know there is still room for improvement, but taking this course has already made me a better writer from when I started. Writing argumentative essays would help improve many skills as an individual by learning how to approach important issues without taking a side and learning this would also help if a person was trying to prove a point…

For most of my papers I had a pretty good understanding of what my purpose needed to be for each of them. I would have to say that I struggled more with the reading response essay more than the others because I realized that I wasn’t quite understanding what the assignment was for that paper. I liked that the essays were more personal so it made it easier to know who my audience was and what I wanted my purpose to be. I was happy with my first essay because I really tried to make the stories and memories come to life. Assignment 1 was easy also because it was something that many people experienced and went through.…

When reviewing the essays read and discussed during class, in the past six weeks, all the essays had similarities and differences. Two essays that stood out to me personally were, Time and Distance Overcome written by Eula Biss and Documents written by Charles D'Ambrosio. Both of these essays have opposite ending, but this allowed the readers to be drawn in. Eula Biss Essay mainly focusses on facts and information. This includes dates and the times of occasions.…

A hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Most if not every person has their own hero, whether it be a celebrity, a family member, or some random person who you admire. My hero is someone who means the world to me and that is my mom. My mom is my hero, my idol, my model figure, my everything. I define my mom as a hero because she has provided me with guidance, motherly love, and has always been there for me.…
