We have all known an ‘Emily Grierson’ at one point or another in our lives. We have all known someone who seems to think they are too important or too good to even be seen with someone that they think is a lesser to them. Someone who would rather sit alone, than make conversation with anyone they think will hurt their image. The ‘Emily Grierson’s’ in our world think that their human worth is defined by their status. We have words to describe people who think and act this way; arrogant, snob, conceited, but we rarely take the time to think about the reason for their behavior. Emily Grierson acts this way because many people had a negative effect on her personality. Mr. Grierson, Emily’s father, is a formidable man. We never meet Mr. Grierson, but his presence looms throughout the story and through Emily herself. Mr. Grierson was always controlling of Emily. I believe he was afraid of losing her. It is odd that in “A Rose for Emily” the narrator never mentions Emily’s mother. Possibly to emphasize the relationship between Emily and her father. I suspect that something tragic had happened to cause Mr. Grierson to be so protective of Emily and …show more content…
She is living in a different era than the town itself. “The newer generation became the backbone and the spirit of the town”, but Emily did not take the oppertunity to realize these changes might benefit her. She is lost in her own world, the only connection being Toby, who hardly has a voice to tell her. Her hair beings fading, turning gray, in contrast with society and culture of the town, which was flourishing. William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” is a short and hard story to tell. It is considered a Southern Gothic genre, influenced by the likes of European Gothic literature in its mystery and morbid feel. Southern Gothic writers like Faulkner were more interested in what appeared to them as anti-social southern behavior stemming from a social system built upon superficial tradition. Emily Grierson is the main character; she is portrayed as coming from a semi-aristocratic family allowing leeway for her quirkiness. The small town of Jefferson seems to experience growing pains but not just in the sense of population but primarily change in modernization.…

“A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner begins with an explanation of who went to Emily Grierson’s funeral and their motives behind it. The men and women who attended saw her as a “fallen monument” and were also curious to see her house, so it is assumed that she did not have any close friends or family. Throughout the text it is shown that Emily suffers from a fear of change and abandonment and that is why she does not keep anyone around except for her manservant. Emily is so terrified of change and in denial of her father’s death to the point where she does not bury her father for three days. It took ministers and doctors almost resorting to force for her to finally accept her father’s death and lay him to rest.…

Looking first at psychological criticism, Freud’s idea of the unconscious mind can be applied to better understand Emily’s character. Freud states that the conscious mind is not always aware of the unconscious mind; therefore, many times a person will have difficulties disguising between reality and what they think reality is at that moment. Readers see this clearly modeled with Emily Grierson. After the passing of…

Her isolation towards the town in return kept the town’s curiosity at bay enough for her to have the little privacy she had. As “A Rose for Emily unveils itself, it becomes more apparent that Miss Emily’s reason for isolation was not only self-inflicted, but a learned behavior also. Miss Emily’s father served as an absent presence throughout the short story. Denying her father’s death, “dressed as usual with no trace of grief on her face,” Miss Emily was still not deemed crazy by the town.…
