Sight Essay Have you ever interpreted something in a literal way? Poetry can be understood on two levels--a literal level, and a metaphorical level. In Emily Dickinson’s poems, things are taken in the way it is only written. In Dickinson’s “We Grow Accustomed To The Dark”, sight is obviously known and viewed as the ability to see things. However, on a metaphorical level, it is talking about how even in dark times, perhaps when you are struggling with depression and there is no light to guide or shine your way, there is always hope. In Dickinson’s “Before I Got My Eyes Put Out” , she does not see things the same way anymore because she lost her sight. She once could see, but she sees and experiences things in a different way now.
