Dickinson wrote a poem about her vision connecting to depression and darkness. In the poem, stanza one, she states, “As when the Neighbor holds the Lamp - To witness her Goodbye” (Emily Dickinson, Stanza 1). The quote above explains her relationship to the guide of her life. The neighbor holding the lamp emphasizes someone important who helped her reach her goals. The quote “to witness her Goodbye” explains the death of her friend in a metaphorical meaning. Therefore the poem shows that her friend was the source of her light, and the dimming of the light begins as her friend has disappeared from her life. This shows the hurtful moment in the author’s life as she experiences a passing friend.
Lastly the two poems, “Before I got my eyes put out” and “We grow accustomed to the Dark” explains the perspective of viewpoint of sight. The speaker in “Before I got my eyes put out,” loses her vision and explains the imagery of the world in her words. However the speaker in “We grow accustomed to the Dark,” loses someone important who was the guide of her lights. She experienced depression and anxiety prior to the loss.
