Her two most famous short stories are “The Storm” and “The Story of an Hour.” These two short stories focus a lot on what Chopin experienced throughout her life in her marriage and family affairs. In her short story “The Storm” an affair takes place between a women named Calixta and a man named Alcee. Calixta is married with a son at the time of the affair and Alcee is married as well. The tension between the two in the story indicate that the affair was necessary to sustain fulfillment in their marriages. Chopin was married in real life, which is why there is the assumption that this is where the short story got its inspiration from. Chopin was known to have had an affair with a man named Albert Sampite. Chopin often wrote about women’s sexuality in her stories which is also what stuck out in “The Storm” (Pr. 121-124). Kate Chopin’s dad died in a railroad accident when she was younger and her mother developed heart failure as well. By reading “The Story of an Hour” is it possible to see the significance of the ties to the events in the story and Chopin’s parents. Mrs. Mallard in the story is Chopin’s mother in real life. Mrs. Mallard has just found out her husband has died in an accident in the story (415-416).
