The great thing about her poems is that a reader can interpret her message in so many ways. In “Before I got my eye put out” she once again shows her unique writing attributes, which is key to her writing. She sends an indirect message to the reader. The last stanza helped me make my interpretation of her oblique message, “So safer – guess – with just my soul, Opon the window pane, Where other creatures put their eyes –, Incautious – of the Sun –”. In “We grow accustomed to the dark” I think she is saying think that you will encounter bumps in the road of life, but you must overcome it. You might run into more thuds than your friends or they might even sometimes come unexpectedly, but if you have the resolve and the determination to prevail over it you will get through it. It was a lot of lines that stood out to me in this one, but these ones help me understand the meaning behind this poem, “Either the Darkness alters -, Or something in the sight, Adjusts itself to Midnight -, And Life steps almost straight.” I personally like “We grow accustomed to the dark” better than “Before I got my eye put
