Emily Dickinson's A Soul Selects Her Own Society

Improved Essays
The poem “ A Soul Selects Her Own Society,” by Emily Dickinson was first interpreted by me as a soul or human being that picks her friends carefully and completely ignores the rest like they don't exist in life. The first four stanzas which are, the soul selects her own society, then shuts the door, to her divine majority, present no more; shows that the soul is really selective of her friends and the people she talks to. The first line, the soul selects her society, shows how the person picks her friends selectively. The second line, then - shuts the door, means that she does not allow more friends to join the soul atmosphere which is restated in the next line, present no more. The next lines of the poem are, Unmoved - she notes the

The narrator in the poem is depicted as exposed and anticipative. Dickinson declares, “I willed my keepsakes, signed away What portion of me I Could make assignable” (10-11). She is anticipating death, by cutting her attachment to the physical world. She is waiting for the revelation of death and what it will bring as she lies on her deathbed. Some part of her life will stay behind when she leaves the world, and transitions into death.…

Emily Dickinson was a very bright person and also a very deep writer. Even though Dickinson never published her poetry and just wrote it on scrap paper it was wonderful writing. She could have been a very well known writer even though she is known she could have been very popular. I think that Dickinson may not have wanted all the attention and that is why she just wrote on paper and kept it to herself. One of my favorite poems is "Success Is Counted Sweetest", because it is a very true poem.…

Emily Dickinson's I Heard a Fly Buzz When I Died is a poem in trimeter iambic lines. I believe this adds suspense, closure only being found when the narrator dies. The conclusion is further amplififed with her style choice of all rhymes before the final stanza being half-rhymes. The diction used appears to be simple and literal yet their true meanings may be left to reader interpretation, such as the fly the narrator sees.…

Emily Dickinson is currently regarded as one of the greatest American poets, even though she kept her work a secret during her life. Although she had a normal childhood, Dickinson became increasingly isolated as she became an adult. Despite this, Dickinson created her best works during this time. One such work was her short poem, I heard a Fly buzz – when I died - . Many of Dickinson 's poems focus on death, so when I heard a Fly buzz – when I died – does so as well, it does not come as a surprise.…

By using these paradoxes she is able to show the reader how complex and how much the soul leaves up to interpretation, much like human thought. Also in using paradoxes Emily Dickinson is able to convey a sense of humanity in a soul, something that is so elusive to one’s thoughts. By using the previously mentioned paradox the Imperial friend and the Agonizing enemy, one is able to see that the sense of humanity that the soul carries is valid, as one can relate that humans themselves seem to have many facets of their own, and in doing so, Emily Dickinson is able to once again show how closely knit the soul is to our own humanity. “Itself - its Sovereign - of itself” Humanity and the soul are shown to be completely intertwined in this clause, as one cannot be free of itself, neither can the soul, when one is freed, the other must as well, Emily Dickinson is conveying that both are one in the…

I agree with Dickinson and her message in Much Madness is divinest Sense is, which is, to put it simply, that conformity is insanity. Others may state that conforming to the majority in some situations can be good, which I also concur with. However, Dickinson isn’t speaking of situational conformity; she’s speaking of psychological conformity - opinions rather than actions. “Much Madness is divinest Sense - To a discerning Eye” - the first and second lines of the poem, state how only those with good judgement, who can tell right from wrong on their own despite others’ attempts to convince them otherwise, can see the insanity of conformity. Dickinson uses an eye to symbolize this to emphasize the blindness of those who conform, and with blindness…

This poem in particular focuses more on exclusion , but also has a subtle theme or reference to death. The poem mirrors Dickinson’s reclusiveness at this stage in her life. The “soul selects her own society” is a metaphor representing how a person selects a lover or a friend then welcomes no one else. This person or soul accepts no one else into their inner circle no matter how great their status, “an emperor kneeling”,or persistence. There is no compromising once the circle is closed.…

Her poems about death confront it’s from reality with honesty, humor, curiosity, and above all a refusal to be comforted” (Baym 1659). Dickinson uses simplistic language to express complex ideas. She writes about life, death and afterlife and uses these topics to get across complex ideas, but does so in a simple way by using simple language. Emily Dickinson was raised in a Calvinist household, where she and her family attended many religious meetings and most of the family’s friends were religious as well (Wolff 4). Readers can tell by Dickinson’s poems on death and afterlife she had an eternal struggle with her belief in God, and what happens to a person after death.…

Emily Dickinson The originative Emily Dickinson was a gifted poet as she composed passionate poems that baffled readers with her literary style. Using her naïve perception, Dickinson’s poetry was written on a daily basis. Through her use of quick-witted metaphors and improvised grammar, Emily Dickinson remains a classic poet whose poetry influenced American Literature today. Emily Dickinson was seen as psychologically unbalanced and reclusive in her life, as shown through her varying emotional poems which had an impact on American Romanticism, through her style of writing, which did not follow the rules of grammar, and through her connotative word meanings which intrigued the twentieth century critiques.…

Dickinson seemed to want to oppose those against her and relate to the individuals that supported her. In modern day society individualism is considered to be socially unacceptable. Those who show individualism are usually considered to be “weird” in the world we live in presently. Our modern society influences individuals to be like everyone else. If you refuse to follow the current trends in our current society, then you are likely to find yourself isolated as Emily Dickinson was.…
