Emily Dickinson: “I felt a Funeral in my Brain.” Have you ever felt an overwhelming sense of sadness or depression? How would you express yourself if you did? Some people use words as an expression and it can be noted as an art form. In the 1800’s, a young teenage girl named Emily Dickinson began composing, revising, and documenting a series of many poems. Between 1858-1865 was eventful time in history, the Civil War. Although this period in time was tragic, Emily Dickinson continued her work and even today is still an inspiring poet that will forever be remembered in American literature.

As all the mourners sit down there is a drum-like beat going on and is making her think that her mind is going numb. After this all the mourners lift the casket and walk across her “soul.” All the mourners were also wearing heavy lead boots as they were stomping around. As the service comes to an end, Emily hears a church bell ringing inside her head and then she pictures the entire universe in her mind. The story ends with her falling through the “floor” in her mind and keeps falling through different
