In the poem “After great pain, a formal feeling comes” the author already explains what’s going to happen “After great pain.” This poem talks about a great hurt and heartache emotionally. Imagery was used in this poem. This poem talks about pain, not physical pain, but a mental pain. This shows the feeling of being sad, sorrow, fear, and disappointment. She explains “the nerves sit ceremonious like tombs” this shows the reader that it is at a funeral. After a funeral, people are dressed in black, this shows the reader that the “tombs” are people who are dealing a great pain who still feel numb to the situation. The tomb resembles to something still, quiet or dead. By understanding what that meant, the readers can feel the lack of emotion is very strong. The readers can also feel that the author basically lives through life not feeling, but feeling numb from all the hurt. In the beginning of the poem, she mentions things about death, like the ceremony and the tomb. I think the poem is about death, the pain she went though and how she is going to cope with it. In my opinion, I think that she didn’t know how to cope with death or try to accept it. This gives a strong statement. The author also said “Remember if outlived” this is also a strong statement because she had survived the experience. When experiencing grief everything freezes, “First – Chill – then Stupor – then letting go” this means that at first there was a chill, then the stupor because the body is numb and eventually you accept it and it dies down. I think that this is a very powerful meaning. In the first two stanzas there was numbness, I think the author was trying to hold it in because he/she wasn’t ready to let go of what happened. I think Dickinson’s wrote this to reflect it on the reality of life. The poem explains that after someone’s death, there is a funeral. The people are quiet and feel like “tombs” as if they were to be a robot when they were at the stone. Then the author shows that the person who is dealing with a loss, realizes that the deceased will be remembered and how he survived. The people are standing in the snow, looking. At first they were cold, then they felt numb, but at the end of the day, everyone doesn’t really have a choice but to let go and continue on with they’re lives. I think that this poem shows the reality of someone’s
