In American Literature, there have been many writers who have shaped the course of the genre of American Literature through their own life narratives and experiences. Not defined or embedded in ancestry, religion, or some form of a shared history in America. Many of these ideas are shaped and defined by ideas for which the writer expresses. These expressions and principles are stemmed through individualism, and self actualization, and the ability to write a literary work of art. Many were criticized on how they expressed their taught an ideas, for America wasn 't ready to break from tradition. Poe struggled to a great extent with his literary career during his lifetime. His work was largely overlooked in both the United States and Great Britain for almost 50years. French poet Charles Baudelaire studied and identified that Poe was in fact a genius. Based on that, American admiration for his work grew strong. He 'd motivated and influenced the likes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Fyodor Dostoevsky, George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells and also poet W.H. Auden. By the mid 20th century, Edgar Allan Poe had joined Twain, Melville, Hawthorne and Hemingway on American literature schools list to be studied. Today, evidence of Poe can be seen in comic books, albums, films, television dramas and even computer games. He is credited with the development of detective stories and horror genre. Writers such as Stephen King recall Poe as one of his favorite authors during his teenage years. Therefore, I have shown how Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and Edgar Allen Poe have influenced the course of American Literature. Although many years passed before their works were truly acknowledge, society has now come to realize that it 's ok to except change. Breaking free from traditional writing styles allow future writers to broaden their ranges.
