Characters Expectations In Faulkner's A Rose For Emily

Emily started off this topic by saying that “Mom was the boss of the house. I had to do what she said.” She then stated that her Joe does whatever Linda says to do and that she wore the pants in her family. Emily talks about how controlling her mother is and how she was controlling of things that Emily did within her own body. For example, Emily has to do things as surprise to her mother. She says this is because if she states that she is planning to do something that Linda doesn’t agree with the mother threatens to disown her. As an example, Emily wanted to get another piercing within her ear (this would have been the second on her ear) within the last summer and her mother said that she would no longer be welcomed within her home. Emily still has not gotten this piercing in fear of her mother’s reaction. Emily said that their family is very materialistic in the sense that both parents solve real problems with purchasing things. Emily has tried to talk to her mother about something that upset her and Linda did not apologize but then took it upon herself to buy things for Emily. When Emily would be mad at her mom for threatening to disown her again her mother would then buy her hundred-dollar bracelets or clothing. For example, a lot of the time they are mad at each other for something miniscule but this makes them not talk for extended periods of time. Emily mostly gets mad at Julio for not talking to her parents or not spending time with them. According to Emily, Julio also gets mad for something very similar. Julio claims that since she doesn’t spend every waking moment talking to him about his children she “doesn’t care about them enough.” Julio feels as though she should put in all the effort of going to see them every chance she gets, but he refuses to put in the same
