Emily Carr Research Paper

Emily Carr is one of Canada’s most well known painters but, there was more to her. Emily Carr was born on December thirteenth 1871 in Victoria, British Columbia (Neering, p. 3). Her parents died in her early teenage years (Neering, p. 8) and in 1890, Carr studied art in San Francisco for five years (Neering, p. 12). When she returned to Victoria at twenty- four years old, she taught children’s art classes in a barn studio (Neering, p. 17). Later, in 1899 she travelled to England to study art at the Westminster School of Art (Neering, p. 17) and then in France in 1910 (Newlands, p. 20). After Carr’s visit in France, she built the House of All Sorts in 1913 during her fifteen year hiatus (Newlands, p. 28). Sadly eighteen years after visiting Lawren Harris in Ontario, from the Group of Seven in 1927 (Carr, p. 1), Emily Carr died at the age of seventy- three …show more content…
One way Carr is celebrated is the wide range of schools that have been named after her across the country. These schools include: Emily Carr Public School (London, On), Emily Carr Elementary School (Vancouver, B.C.), Emily Carr Middle School (Ottawa, On), Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (Vancouver, B.C.) (Art History Archives, par. 8). She is also celebrated by having her artwork displayed in the Vancouver Art Gallery, the AGO, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Glenbow Museum, McCord Museum of Canadian History, and the National Gallery of Canada art galleries for the public to see and enjoy (artcyclopedia, par. 3). Other commemorations are the statue of Carr with her dog, Billie, and her monkey, Woo in Victoria, British Columbia (Tourism Victoria, par. 1) . Carr’s childhood home is now a historic site in Victoria and a museum for the public to visit (Tourism Victoria, par. 1). She is buried in The Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.
