Emily Blunt Essay

If ever there was film that epitomized rising talent’s ability to vastly improve mediocre material it’s this one. Emily Blunt is quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses working today, she magnificently embodies everything I believe a great actress should. Her comfort zone regarding roles in virtually non-existent, she’s willing to commit whole-heartedly to every role she gets, and her versatility and range allows both of the previous assets to work as remarkably well as they do. ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ was her way of proving to the world that she is a bonafide bad-ass, however, you kool kats already knew she could hold her own in action roles long before due to films like ‘Looper’ and ‘The Adjustment Bureau’, and this film is simply another notch under her already uber-impressive belt.

Though it’s not a specifically bad script, it’s on the cusp in many areas. There’s a great deal of this film that’s near misses, the film doesn’t quite go where it should and it hurts the film in the long-run. Taylor Sheridan pens the script here, and he wrote a conventional drug thriller that really doesn’t bring anything new or different to the table. He nearly creates an incredible film, but sadly falls just shy of that mark. What elevates the material here is the talent bringing it to life. Without Emily Blunt’s fantastic performance, this versatile character isn’t all that interesting or important to the story. Without Josh Brolin’s dead-pan delivery and subtle humor, his character is a self-righteous douchebag who enjoys his job way too much. Without Benicio del Toro’s haunting performance, his character is a sleazy hitman who is clearly in the game to inflict harm upon others. Without Dennis Villenueve’s gorgeous partnership with Roger Deakins, this is an orthodox little drug film that’s no different from the countless other films in the same

Where as I normally end up arguing against why a film should be considered a horror film, this time I'm going other way and argue why Lightning Bug is a Horror film. As I stated in Horror, My Definition, a Horror film is a film that used dread and horror, while trying to evoke negative emotions. Lightning Bug does that for me, upon first viewing I wasn't that impressed and disregarded is horror elements. Instead focusing on how its a Coming of Age Drama. But after viewing the film never really settled and has passed through my mind on several occasions and when I reflect on the film it's dark and haunting undertones that remain.…

Despite a fabulous cast, Theron's absence for most of this visually outstanding but underwhelming film takes away its most compelling element -- a treacherous villain. Blunt is a wonderful actress, but her Freya, while fascinating, isn't as interesting as her older sister. She's like Elsa with a big army and a frozen heart, but she's not convincingly eeevil like Ravenna. The romantic subplot between Eric and Sara is predictable from the first time they lay eyes on each other as kidnapped children, and no time is spent on how their forbidden love managed to grow in a kingdom where they're supposed to feel only loyalty. The messy plot doesn't allow viewers to see more than that they were the best and prettiest and therefore…

Leading his cast this time is Emily Blunt, who continues her surging ascent to highest reaches of the Hollywood field, and is supported memorably by the awe-inspiring performance of Benicio del Toro. In the end, is Sicario a sexy, action-heavy thrill-ride? Absolutely not, but those of you looking for dynamic drama that gushes authenticity and creativity, Sicario – for better or worse – will quite simply knock your socks off.…
