Emilia Carr Death Penalty

Decent Essays
In capital punishment, the “worst crime” is being poor, the capital punishment is exclusively reserved for the poor people who do not have the economic resources to pay a lawyer who is capable of handling a death penalty case. In the case of Emilia Carr, she was sentenced to death even though her contribution to the murder was minor. Her boyfriend, on the other hand, was the one who killed his wife and because he had money to afford an attorney he got life in prison instead. Our criminal justice system is very bias, the laws are enforced by the wealthy people against the poor people. Our system is not and has never been meant to impose the appropriate punishment on criminals instead, it is meant to keep poor people incarcerated. Our legal system

Women who have been executed were all convicted murders. Some killed their partners and some kill for no reason. As a result, when women commit murder, they are most likely to kill the people closest to them. Rosalind Bentley from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, notes that “[m]ost people who commit crimes do them when they are young. For a woman standing in front of a jury, particularly if she is very young and has children, or if she herself has been the victim of abuse, she could seem a more likely candidate for rehabilitation than a man accused of the same crime” (Bentley).…

I chose to do my essay on the sentencing some people are given because some people do need to realize just how small minded our country is. I know some people deserve the sentencing they get but let’s face it; some of the sentencing for these convictions is ridiculous. Something more serious, someone more harmful could be on the loose or given a small amount of time. Not everybody will agree with this paper but I can guarantee they will when it comes to their own loved ones. Nobody looks at these cases the same way.…

It highlights the bias of criminal charges against the poor as opposed to the well off and claims that from even before the process of arrest, trial, and sentencing, the system is biased against the poor. Whether that be in what it choosen to be treated as crime, who is conviced , length of sentencing or ignoring the numerous criminal acts of the rich. It also claims that there isn’t enough compassion or attention for the reasons for crime in poverty stricken neighborhoods but rather these people are looked down upon.…

In the start of the understanding, punishment is explained as "the infliction of harm, consequences or the denial of certain privileges such as freedom, by an authorized person or persons on an individual belief to be guilty of breaking and going against the law or more generally of having done the wrong thing. (Edmunds, 1991) This said, it can be understood that, capital punishment is an extension based in the notion of punishment; it exacts a higher penalty and consequence on a greater wrong that has been done or could equally be seen as the highest penalty exacted on the biggest wrongs faced and done in a society. The highest form of penalty/punishment will be the penalty of death for the doing of a specific crime as compared to the denial of one’s freedom or any access to material possessions he/she…

For example, a father who is alone with three children and is in the border line of losing his job and children may push him to get involved with criminal activity such as theft or selling drugs. We could also use the example of a woman who is in fear of her current partner, as this person rapes her and physically abuses her and the kids. This mother in desperation would most likely also end up involved in criminal activity, killing the man who is always hurting her and her children. These two scenarios of course would result in both victims ending up in jail and serving a possible life in prison. In these two cases capital punishment wouldn't be a good choice as it wont seek the greatest good.…

Upon celebrating the 20 anniversary of being released, today, Sabrina Butler works as the assistant director of membership and training at the Witness to Innocence program. Together with her husband and three children, Sabrina now lives a normal life back in Columbus, Mississippi. When she reflects on the hardship that she has experienced, Sabrina stands firmly behind the idea that death penalty should be abolished entirely: “even if every reform was adopted, innocent people would still get convicted and sent to death row,” she said. She believes that “as long as human beings are in charge, they will make mistakes.” Butler contends that if death penalty cannot assure that all inmates on death row are utterly guilty, the criminal justice system should not risk the chance to execute innocent people.…
