It was when I was in the fourth grade, and I was searching for a reason behind the diagnosis of my mother’s schizophrenia that I developed the mindset that my mothers’ illness contributed to society as a whole. At only nine years old, although my way of thinking wasn’t yet that complex, many years later I would find myself identifying with the theoretical perspective that was developed by the work of Emile Durkheim, the functionalist perspective.
