Emerging Technologies and their Uses in Healthcare Technology continues to advance at a quick pace and health organizations are taking notice. While advances have been made in technology used to diagnose and treat diseases, in organizations, much of the newer technologies are focused on the consumer. Significant advancements have been made in the mobile technology arena with cellphones and other wearable devices for the patient, but also for technology used by healthcare professionals. This paper will discuss the value of these technology advancements, the need to protect the data that is used, and how these technologies actually help with chronic disease management.
Mobile Technology The healthcare industry was forced into the digital age with legislation such as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that requires organizations to utilize electronic health records (CMS, 2015). As a result, the patient flip-charts are part of the past. With the change to electronic health records, came the opportunity to utilize mobile devices. Whether the device is a laptop installed in the patient room, a hand held phone, tablet, or a robot looking workstation that is pushed from one room to the next in a hospital, mobile technology is changing the delivery of healthcare.
