Emerging Leaders Program Analysis

Improved Essays
There are truly many aspects of the Emerging Leaders Program that grab my attention and push me to apply for the program, but one of the things that appealed to me the most was the opportunity to come to the University of Memphis during the summer before fall classes start and get a feel for the campus and transition into college life. This aspect grasped my attention the most because it gives students an opportunity to get on campus early and get a feel for it. This is beneficial because when other freshman come in they can look to me or the other leaders for guidance. Also it gives students a chance to be in an environment with other leaders and grow within our leadership skills and it helps develop our skills as a follower. I am curious to learn more about the …show more content…
Also I am curious as to how and if our lives as Emerging Leaders will be different than those of the regular incoming freshman.

Throughout life most human beings, if not all, will experience challenges and will have to make challenging decisions to test how they withstand the course of life. Whether the challenge is as tiny as a crumb or as immense as a mountain, there will be a time in a human's life where he or she has to make that hard decision. The most challenging decision I have ever made in my life was whether I needed to quit my first job or continue to work in the environment I was in. My very first job with actual pay was at a local fast food restaurant near my school. I got hired on the spot and was excited to get my feet into the real world as a working young man. Everything was perfect for the first few weeks until I started to notice some things I thought were very taboo in a workplace.

I have participated in NYC’s Ladders for Leaders program for the past two years and I have not once regret participating. In those shorts 2 months each year, I had gained an extraordinary amount of experience that I can take into the workplace. For example, my internship at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office last summer taught me to effectively work together to be able to efficiently finish our tasks. If I were to be on my own and worked independently, it would take me a drastically longer time and would never been able to meet my great co-workers. I would like to join Ladders for Leaders once again to gain even more experience in order to be more prepared for the workplace.…

I’m currently a member of a group called YP4 (Young People for Change) which is a long-term leadership development initiative that identifies, engages, and empowers the newest generation of progressive leaders. Within this organization when I first joined a clique was formed with a liaison, isolated member, one who bridge everyone together and a gatekeeper. The clique was formed because we had to break up in little groups to get to know each other and understood everyone social justice plan. For me I was isolated one, I never gave the group my ideas or engaged in conversation everything was limited unless it was a topic I was passionate about than I would give little interaction. Jason was the gatekeeper because he was the group leader and…

A dilemma that I faced, and still am facing is simply the decision about what I want to do with my life after my high school career. In my freshman year of high school my goal was simply to get through the year in one piece. I was forced to conform to my new environment and all the strict rules that came along with it. Along with that it was the sudden transition from being the "big dogs" as eighth graders at my middle school to being "fresh-meat" in my first year high school. With so much attention placed on me as a freshman like on the varsity basketball team, where I was constantly forced to prove my worth to the coach and the players, to stepping out of my comfort zone and performing in a mandatory play for the rest of the the school as…

In terms of processing the course teachings, I found the Handbook for Transformative Learning difficult to retain at times. Although this is a topic of great interest to me and the current context in which I serve; the material has often caused me to gravitate more towards The Adaptive Leadership textbook by Heifetz. All things considered, I believe that the development of the Synergy paper actually presents the student and pastoral leaders with a unique opportunity to shape the destiny of the local church and the AME denomination by virtue of two major advantages at their disposal. First, the availability and accessibility of successful nationally recognized experts in the area of Adaptive Leadership and Transformative Learning. Having a full arsenal of proven experts present during our first semester at Payne Theological Seminary caused a hunger in my spirit.…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

Leadership and Change Being a change agent can sometime be looked as the person that is “rocking the boat”. Having a strong desire to make positive changes in an organization should not be looked as a bad thing; it is not always easy especially in dealing with others that are resistance to change. Through the Change Leader assessment I found myself to have a strong attitude towards change, scoring a seven; honestly not surprising as my rank recently increased and the organization I recently joined. As a strong change agent, I needed to identify obstacles that can affect change from happening along with the object or process that is needs to change. Following the stages of change in an organization is important especially when trying to…

I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
