Leadership is defined as the behavior of an individual when directing the activities of a group toward a shared goal. The key aspects of the leadership role involve influencing group activities and coping with change. (Schyve, 2009). A leader is an individual who is able to determine an explicit set of role behaviors to influence the attitudes and behaviors of others. In healthcare settings, good leadership is important, critical and also challenging for its success. Fully engaged leaders possibly best portray the notion of complexity in the relationship they form as they transform work and the workplace, help others own their change, undertake the right change process, and integrate the rules of engagement for the postindustrial age (Porter-O’Grady and Malloch, 2015). The characteristics of leadership that David displays in the case study includes troubleshooting problems as they arise, resolving personnel issues, integrate changes in policies, and communicating patient care protocols to the nursing staff. Also being competent and confidence in trouble-shooting issues and follow-up are other characteristics. I say these characteristics are in consistence with that of Emergent Leadership as per Porter-O’Grady and Malloch (2015). …show more content…
David must embrace flexibility: Not every problem demands the same solution. By being flexible to new ideas and open-minded enough to consider them, he will increase the likelihood to find the best possible answer.
