Emergency Room-Personal Narrative

It was 7:30 on a Sunday morning and I could sense Mom’s hand, trying to rouse me from a deep sleep. It was the first real sleep I had had in weeks. I fought with my swollen eyelids just to separate them from each other. As I slowly parted them, I saw the blurred image of my mom and sisters in front of me. “How are you feeling?” they asked apprehensively, as if the answer was a matter of life or death. I sat up and peered around the room with what little vision I had, which wasn't much between the absence of glasses and my puffy eyes. Through the haze, I noticed that my room was in ruins. I sat and pondered for a moment before I gave an answer, but as I was about to reply another question came to me. Why was Anjanay there? Instead, I decided to lay back down to try to return to sleep. My mom would never allow this. That was when flashes of the night before started to come to me. The first thing I remembered was lying in the back seat of Mom’s car while …show more content…
The buzz of the radio finally brought me back to reality again, and suddenly we were in the emergency room parking lot. Why? Right as I entered, the smell of cleaner and baby powder filled my nose, and it was incredibly overwhelming. My mom started to talk to the lady at the front desk, so I found a seat. After sitting for nearly thirty minutes, a boy around my age sat two or three seats down from us with his parents. By the way his leg was shaking, I could tell he was anxious, but there was something so intriguing and divine about him. I contemplated talking to him, but as I was just about to, another memory came to me. I saw my mom running into my black room, yelling at me to calm down, and hugging me as she slowly removed the pill bottle from my

Scraping your knee on the sidewalk, getting hit hard with the basketball, falling off the monkey bars, these are just a few examples of ways you can get hurt at school. I slowly crawled out of my bed and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. Where is the smell of coffee? Where is the blaring sound of country music dad plays every morning? Every now and then I find myself staring into space, reminiscing the past, particularly where I grew up. As I get deep in thought, my senses start to tingle, the very image of my mother standing in the kitchen, the floral scent of her perfume, the roaring oven aided by the thunderous but yet subtle kitchen ventilation that is always on when she is cooking. My mind starts to wander and it takes me to my room, chaotic and unorganized, yet I knew where everything is placed. My clothes were all over the place, it was a habit of mine to dump all my clothes on the floor and my mother was always the one who had to look after my mess. My grandpa’s war movies are still clearly embedded in my memory, he loved to watch documentaries or even propaganda regarding the second sino-Japanese war, my grandpa was a hardcore patriot.…

The buzz of indiscernible conversations and clamour of the emergency department (ED) faded into the distance as I felt the burning gaze of everyone in the room. The rhythmic beeping of the oxygen saturation monitor intensified as if taunting me, challenging me. I became cognizant of how tremulous and sweaty my hands were as I pleaded for the endotracheal tube’s cooperation. After what felt like an eternity, I heard the words I had been desperately waiting for, “breath sounds bilaterally.” While I was drawn to the high acuity adrenaline-inducing cases, it was the diversity of undifferentiated patients that solidified my decision to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine (EM).…
