I have always loved the idea of surgery. The thrill alone is enough for me to join this specialty. The idea of helping medically underserved communities and donating my time as a surgeon for those in need is something I have dreamed about. However, recent clinical exposures have left me perusing different interests. Recognizing the current barriers underserved individuals face, forces me to reconsider the greater good. I know the likelihood of seeing those I wish to serve would be limited as a surgeon. For these reasons I have changed my interest to emergency medicine. My understanding is, as an emergency physician I would have more freedom to treat those with little or no medical coverage. This specialty would place me in a better
