Currently there are only two main types of Stem Cells. The two main types of cells cultured are called Embryonic Stem Cells and Adult Stem Cells (“Basics”). Embryonic Stem Cells are formed by a newly fertilized egg ready to begin its first division process. This type of stem cells can be broken down into two different categories; In Vitro Fertilization which is taken from donated human blastocyts and Alter Nuclear Transfer which involves the slipping and separation of the nucleus of the donated egg (Jurkowski).
Adult Stem Cells are said to be hidden deep within tissues that are surrounded by millions of ordinary cells primarily located in the brain, eyes, blood stream, liver, bone marrow, muscles, and skin (Jurkowski).
There are two other places derived from the places where adult stem cells are found. Umbilical cord blood is one that is use in transplants or blood transfusions. Another one is hematopoietic stem cells found in blood or bone barrow which has been used by scientists to treat patients with diseases such as leukemia, sickle cell anemia, bone marrow damage, some metabolic disorders and immune deficiencies where the body has lost the ability to replenish its supply of healthy blood cells (Jurkowski). Embryonic stem cells are the result of the primitive cell of the inner cell mass that has been cultured by a sperm and egg. This growth is then fully ready to be used by the fifth or sixth day when the blastocyst would normally be implanted into the uterine wall, if it was occurring naturally. At this stage cells are pluripotent or said to be undifferentiated to become potential specialized cells (O. Hynes). If separated and cultured again the cells of the inner cell mass can be converted into embryonic stem cells that are pluripotent and need to be propagated carefully while still maintaining that potential of being unspecialized (O.
