Embryonic Stem Cell Research Essay

Embryonic Stem Cell Research is a controversial topic because many view it as a crime against humanity and others view it as advancement in modern science. To be able to participate in this controversy we have to understand exactly what an embryo is, what are stem cells, and precisely what embryonic stem cell research is. Human life begins at fertilization, where a female egg cell and a male sperm cell meet. This result in a single cell called a zygote. The female and male both pass on their DNA to this zygote, where it contains half of the DNA from both the mother and the father. Mitosis commences where then the zygote will begin to divide and produce a multicellular organism called and embryo. The consideration of research raise so many ethical issues which comprise of the development, the destruction of human embryos, and the usage of embryos and that’s why the controversial issue is still an ongoing debate. Here I will discuss the origin of Embryonic Stem Cells, their implications for basic research, it normal biological phenomenon and how humans have manipulated it, how it is used and why it is so controversial in today’s society.
Embryonic Stem Cells are derived from embryos at the developmental stage before the time that implantation would normally occur in the uterus. So they are not derived from eggs fertilized in the human body but from eggs that have been fertilized in vitro at an in vitro fertilization clinic, and then they are donated for research purposes with informed consent of the donors. The fertilization process is not a single event but a series of steps that begin normally when a female egg and a male sperm first come into contact and intermingle with each other which scientifically we consider it as the union of two haploid gametes that fuse and create a diploid cell.
