Today i will explore both sides of the argument and then come to a conclusion.
Embryonic stem cells come from a blastocyst. A blastocyst is formed when the egg has divided into about 100 cells during development. This usually happens at around 5 days after fertilisation.
The embryos used are leftover from IVF treatment. IVF stands for in vitro fertilisation and it is used when a couple is not able to conceive a child naturally. This may be due to infertility or a genetic disorder such as Cystic Fibrosis. The procedure involves removing an egg from the woman and fertilising it with a sperm in a laboratory. The fertilised egg, called a embryo is then returned …show more content…
They believe that the embryo has the potential to fully develop into a human being. By researching on them this possibility is ripped away. In their opinion destroying one life to save another is unethical and immoral . They say that life is devalued when the stem cells are used and the embryo is disregarded. They also believe that life begins at conception, and going against this by using the embryo for research is morally unacceptable. they regard this to be the murder of a human life.
Scientists consider embryonic stem cells to be the most valuable form of stem cells as they have the potential to become any type of cell in the body. This is one of the main advantages of using and researching embryonic stem cells. New organs or tissues such as muscle, bone and blood could be grown to help someone and a variety of different things could be researched. some of these may be :- to increase knowledge about the causes of miscarriages -to develop methods for detecting the presence of gene or chromosome abnormalities - and to increase knowledge about serious diseases.
However, many believe that scientists are not giving enough attention to exploring the potential of adult stem cells. Research on umbilical cord blood has also been given very little attention. People argue that the funding put into stem cell research should be used to find out more about adult stem cells. This would avoid all the moral
