Embodies The San Francisco Culture

Good day to you. It is in great earnest I seek the position of Communications and Programs Coordinator at San Francisco Heritage. A question a preservationist or historian might ask is what will be remembered once we are gone? From the indigenous nations that fished off the sand dunes to the booming economies during the Gold Rush and World War II, many agents have moved in and out of the city by the bay--ranchero’s who tamed the land for Mexico, Anglo American's in search of gold, blacks escaping the Jim Crow south in search of prosperity, or those finding a safe haven when they felt the world was being torn at the seams during the 1960’s. These agents share an important story which embodies the San Francisco culture we share today. This

The following paragraphs critique the syllogism and conclusions of James Heaton's article “What is the Brand of New York? (Historic House Museums)”. Heaton suggests that the brand and history of a city, as well as, history of its museums and the way these are connected are fundamental factors for the evolution and success of any museum. Concurrently, Heaton explains how the factors mentioned above affect historic house museums today by giving an example of the Morris-Jumel Mansion, a historic house museum located in New York city that is trying hard to survive. According to the author, the first reason for the decline of the Morris-Jumel Mansion is brand.…

One experience that shaped my character as a person was my part-time job in high school. I worked as tour guide in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Being a tour guide pushes a person to be open minded and curious about other people. I remember having a tour group from New York City, and we had a great conversation when we were comparing our respective Chinatowns. The conversation had me continuously think of questions and reply to their question with an answer to the best of my ability.…

California is a state that consists of countless historical landmarks that have been preserved in order to better understand the heritage of that specific site. Preservation is a way for people to recycle land and buildings in order to teach people about the resources that were once used in the past. People observe and learn through the preservation of landmarks so that important details such as traditions, rituals, languages, and skills can be incorporated into our present and future time periods. Out of many captivating historical landmarks, I chose to visit Coyote Hills Regional Park because I wanted to learn more about its importance. Coyote Hills is a significant part of history because it teaches society that in spite of the invasion and the genocide that the Ohlone Indians underwent, decedents of the tribes are now connecting with their communities by sharing their land and history with society.…

Ladies and gentleman- I am here today to make an argument on whether or not I feel there should be a monument to pioneers on the Oregon trail. Over the past few days, I have grappled with several questions such as: are these people American heroes? Are they deserving of memorialization forever? Do their strengths, overcome their weaknesses? I searched for answers by reading many letters, journals, and the like, as well as striving to understand what affects the pioneers had on the west.…

“The streets are paved in sunshine.” This was the first statement I heard upon arriving at Stanford University. The woman who said those six words that caught me completely off guard approached me with a California-aged smile, casual and relaxed, and welcomed me with open arms. She introduced herself as an alumni of the university and proceeded to tell me about the great experiences she had as a student and the memories she created with her best friends in her “prime time”. As she rambled on, I realized that she said nothing about the stellar academics, the esteemed professors, or the endless professional opportunities offered at the University.…

When the idea conservation of cultural landscapes was conceived, the public’s memory was focused on preserving landscapes and certain structures or communities that reminded the public of the past. Bluestone states after the Second World War the idea of preserving landscapes and structures moved to the preservation of structures valued for their architecture instead of historical structures, which resulted in the demolishing of many downtown areas and historic neighborhoods across the nation (Bluestone, 16). I have always had a passion for history and storytelling since I was a child and decided in seventh grade world history class that I wanted to be an archaeologist, discovering ancient cultures and uncovering their secrets. I maintained this plan, arriving at Boston University as an archaeology major but after several semesters of study realized that it wasn’t the exact path for me. I began to grow my appreciation of museums, admiring how they could ignite wonder, curiosity, and learning in myself and others. I realized this was where I felt most at home. Therefore, I decided to change my major to art history, while retaining an archaeology minor, and explore history through the lens of artist’s interpretations and ideas.…

Now that we are at the end of the Spring 2016 semester, it is time to reflect on the History Department’s exciting year. I don’t normally like to turn my back on people, but I wanted to model the History Student Association’s new t-shirt. We are scholars who are “in-betweeners.” “Our minds are in the past, our bodies in the present, and our aspirations in the future.”…
